Chicago is in simple words "Devilish and Delightful"!The Broadway blockbuster, ever-sexy, elegant, and fun Broadway hit musical is scheduled for its latest stop in San Francisco, this March, at the stunning Golden Gate Theatre. Enjoy Chicago this spring in the gorgeous San Francisco, on Friday 7th March 2025, at the remarkable Golden Gate Theatre.
This timeless narrative of fame, fortune, and musicals, delves into the compromises made in pursuit of stardom. Chicago is a powerful and entertaining story conveyed through music and dance.
The musical is the second-longest running performance ever to be presented on Broadway, surpassed only by "The Phantom of the Opera". The Show portrays the story of two rival and vaudevillian performers named Velma and Roxie locked in jail for murder.
While Velma is already a well-known vaudevillian entertainer, Roxie is a up-and-coming performer trying to build her fame. Although they were both jailed for murder they had different motives. Velma's motive was betrayal and revenge after finding her husband and sister in a compromising position. On the other hand, Roxie's motive was calculated ambition and ruthlessness. Thus, unlike Velma's action, which was driven by chaos, Roxie's scheme was deliberate, and was intentionally used to draw notoriety.
Throughout, Chicago also reveals the clandestine game played by law enforcement and ordinary people. Roxie's and Velma's lawyer, Billy Flynn, who specializes in defending women prisoners alleged of murder, is seen transforming courtroom proceedings into theatrical events, by altering his clients' hearing into theatrical productions composed of excitement and sorrow.
While Matron "Mama" Morton is seen aiding the two criminals build a connection with the outside world, mainly with Billy, and taking advantage of the other prisoners for her advantage.
Chicago is an compelling production that symbolizes the global power game and the different forms it can take such as; attraction, fortune, fame, and intellect to deceive the masses for individuals' ultimate personal satisfaction.
The musical has received a vast amount of recognitions featuring a total of 6 Tony awards, 5 Drama Desk awards, 1 Grammy award, 1 Olivier Award, 6 Academy Awards (Oscars), 3 Golden Globe Awards, 1 BAFTA Award, and 2 SAG Awards.
The show has left a lasting mark on the musical and celebrity culture since its debut, including its impact on American musicals, choreography and style, film adaptation, Cultural Commentary, and future production.
