The musical

Globally recognized for its signature jazz-influenced theme, electrifying choreography, and minimalist staging style which exhibits the spirit of vaudeville, the performance firmly criticizes the infatuation with celebrity culture.

The renewed musical set in 1920, featuring music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and a book by Ebb and Bob Fosse, centers around the themes of decadence, crime, and the pursuit of fame. After being debuted on Broadway in 1975, the musical has received an enormous amount of positive and negative criticism, mainly for its thought-provoking message, and cultural impact.

The story

Like Michael Corleone from The Godfather who turned from an innocent, outsider to a legacy, power inheritor, Chicago is a exploration through the phases one goes through to satisfy their thirst for fame and fortune.

The show illustrates how even felony can be a means for fame, highlighting the imperfection in the justice system. The depicts how individuals mold themselves, and who they are to reach their ultimate selfish goal. The show became sensational from the start for changing the crime game and introducing new roles of "women" to the genre. The 1996 Broadway production held the record as the second-longest-running American musical in Broadway history.

Chicago strives to showcase the superficiality of fame, and the paradox between good deeds and status, illustrating that not all famous people are successful in the sense of morality. The show sums up various individuals each acting for their personal interest, and how they cross into each other's lives, through different perspectives.

The awards

The production has gained several recognitions including the Tony Awards (1997), Drama Desk Awards (1997), Grammy Awards (1998), Academy Awards (2003), Golden Globe Awards (2003), BAFTA Awards (2003), and many others.
