The Broadway musical, written by the lauded playwright Anthony McCarten, was produced by Robert Gaudio and the two-time Tony Award-winner Ken Davenport. With help from more than 60 years of Diamond’s music, the team created a “musical collage” with songs that take on "lives of their own”, as McCarten stated in an interview with The Boston Globe for the Neil Diamond Musical.
This magnificent two-hour-and-15-minute adventure comprises two acts. The first act ends with the timeless classic Sweet Caroline, followed by a 15 min intermission. Use this time to grab refreshments, rejoin the show for another hour of award-winning performances.
Many lifelong fans of Neil Diamond still remember when his 1976 album, A Beautiful Noise, was first released. They will never forget seeing the musical of the same name it came to San Francisco. The exciting performance fascinated audiences from the opening act with a full mesmerizing Broadway show and memorable songs.
The musical soon ended up on NYC Broadway, running from late 2022 into early 2024 at the Broadhurst Theatre. Talents like Will Swenson (who played the young Neil Diamond), Mark Jacoby (present-day Diamond), and Linda Powell (The Doctor) reprised their roles after the Boston production.
The show quickly took to the road. With a fresh new cast, including the American Idol winner, Nick Fradiani. Fradiani announced he would play the role of the young Neil Diamond.
The story follows the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, starting in the present dayreminiscing from a therapist’s office. Neil Diamond explains how he can no longer make music like he used, as the therapist helps him navigate the trials brought by this reality throughout A Beautiful Noise.
The play goes back to Diamond's Brooklyn childhood, showing his introduction to music and all the good and bad times since then, including his rise to stardom and fight with depression. But, what long-time Diamond lovers anticipate most is re-experiencing Diamond’s catalog of hits in the Neil Diamond Musical.
While original stage play was nominated for Outstanding Production of a Musical by the Drama League Awards and Outstanding New Broadway Musical, the performers were the real stars. Hoggett, Hurder, and LeProtto won Outstanding Ensemble in a Broadway Show for their dance routines. Other nominations include the Drama Desk Award and Drama League Awards.
