A Beautiful Noise – The Neil Diamond Musical at Golden Gate Theatre

The Broadway musical, written by the critically acclaimed Anthony McCarten, was directed by Robert Gaudio and the award-winning Ken Davenport. With over 60 years of Diamond’s music, the team produced a “musical collage” with showtunes that take on "lives of their own”, as McCarten said during an interview with The Boston Globe. 

This heart-wrenching 2h 15m adventure comprises two acts, the first ending with the beautiful song Sweet Caroline, followed by a 15 min intermission. Use this time to grab food and drink, rejoin the show for another hour of beautiful songs and engaging performances.

The Production

Many lifelong fans of Neil Diamond still remember when his 1976 album, A Beautiful Noise, first dropped. Those same fans will never forget experiencing the musical of the same name LIVE as it came to San Francisco. The jukebox musical fascinated audiences from the very beginning with a mesmerizing Broadway show and catchy songs. 

Afterward, the production took on Broadway, running from late 2022 into early 2024 at the Broadhurst Theatre. Famed actors like Will Swenson (who played the young Neil Diamond), Mark Jacoby (present-day Diamond), and Linda Powell (The Doctor) all delivered fantastic performances from the Boston production. 

The show quickly took to the road. Now, new faces make up the traveling cast, including the American Idol winner, Nick Fradiani. Fradiani announced he would play the role of the young Neil Diamond. 

The Story

The production follows the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, starting in the present day with Westenberg sitting in a therapist’s office. As Diamond, he explains how he can no longer make music like he used to while the doctor helps him navigate the trials brought by this reality throughout A Beautiful Noise. 

The story goes all the way back to Diamond's Brooklyn childhood, discussing his introduction to music and all the good and bad times since then, including his rise to stardom and struggle with depression. But, what long-time Diamond lovers anticipate most is reliving Diamond’s catalog of hits in the Neil Diamond Musical.

Awards & Reviews

While original stage play was nominated for Outstanding Production of a Musical and Outstanding New Broadway Musical by Outer Critics Circle Awards, the actors were the real stars. Hoggett, Hurder, and LeProtto won Outstanding Ensemble in a Broadway Show for choreography and dance. Other award nominations include the Drama Desk Award and Drama League Awards.
