Book of Mormon, co-written by South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker, is coming to Golden Gate Theatre in San Francisco, California on Friday 10th April 2020. This comedy-musical has been described as “filthy, offensive, and sweet” by Vogue Magazine since its story of two Latter-Day Saints missionaries and their quest to preach the faith to a remote Ugandan Village shows real characters rather than cariactures. From the opening song “Hello!” to the closing musical number, audiences will laugh, smile, and feel enriched by this surprisingly moving tale. But don’t take our word for it, when audiences keep coming back for more, even after their initial opening run in 2011. The Book of Mormon is a comedy musical conceived of by Robert Lopez and South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. The idea behind the story came from Parker and Stones backgrounds growing up in Colorado where they grew intimately familiar with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day SAints and its members. The trio met and became friends at The University of Colorado Boulder where they later collaborated on a musical film, Cannibal! The Musical, which was also their first experience with movie musicals. This experience in comedy and satire led them to creating the famous South Park television show for Comedy Central, which exploded in popularity for its biting, offensive, and often filthy brand of satire.
After establishing themselves as masters of shock-comedy and satire, it was only natural that the comedy duo and their friend, Robert Lopez, would get together to work on The Book of Mormon.
The story tells the tale of two Latter-DAy Saints missionaries as they attempt to preach the faith to a remote Ugandan village only to come across apathy and disinterest since the village has more pressing concerns including; HIV/AIDS, famine, and oppression from village warlords.
Ever since it’s opening night, the play has found critical praise and favor, with many critics accepting its filthy, offensive nature and pointing out that there’s heart and depth to be found. The New York Post reports that audiences were “sore from laughing so hard” while other critics compare it to being a successful melding of dark elements to sunny melodies in a way that hasn’t happened since Mel Brooks adapted his film The Producers for the stage over a decade before.
The critical acclaim, audience reception, and heart has earned The Book of Mormon several awards including a 2011 Tony Award for Best Musical, a 2012 Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album, and a 2017 Helpmann Award for Best Musical. So this is your best chance to catch the incredible Book of Mormon live at Golden Gate Theatre in San Francisco, California on Friday 10th April 2020!
